Cirque du Soleil: OVO is buzzing around the UK

Written by:

Ahead of the 40th anniversary of Cirque du Soleil‘s founding, hit show OVO is back on tour around the UK – marking its own 15th anniversary.

The world’s premiere circus company, Cirque du Soleil was founded in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in June 1984. In the four decades since its founding, new shows have been launched almost annually, with some years seeing multiple new shows launched – six in 2019 alone! The company’s latest show, Echo, began performances at Grand Chapiteau in April 2023.

In Summer and Autumn 2022, Corteo (which premiered in April 2005) toured the UK. A year and a half later, the troupe is back, with a revival of OVO, which premiered in April 2009 and toured the UK 6 years ago. The revival features three new acts and characters so there will be some nice surprises for those that have already seen it.

OVO takes inspiration from the world of insects, with the idea for the show not about the acts, the dancing nor the insects, but, rather, movement. The score is inspired by the music of Brazil, with “ovo” meaning “egg” in Portuguese.

A colourful intrusion into a new day in the life of insects; a non-stop riot of energy and movement. Through show-stopping
acrobatics highlighting the unique personalities and abilities of selected insect species, OVO explores the beauty of biodiversity in all its contrasts and vibrancy. A high-energy and high-acrobatic production, this energetic show is loved by children and adults alike.

“We are thrilled to be bringing an updated version of OVO back to the UK for the first time in six years. In 2018, OVO’s tour of the UK was so successful it became Cirque du Soleil’s most watched show ever in the UK. So, we are delighted to be bringing OVO back to the UK in collaboration with our partner Live Nation,” said Duncan Fisher, the Vice President of Touring Shows

Cirque du Soleil: OVO tours the UK from March 21 to April 28, with a residency at AO Arena, Manchester from March 27 to 31. It then tours Europe and the USA until September 8.
