National Youth Music Theatre – Relaunch

The National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) launched its exciting, hotly anticipated 2025 season with an exclusive “relaunch” event at The Other Palace Theatre.

A drinks reception and talent showcase ushered in a new era of young talent and upcoming musicals. NYMT alum and recent patron Matt Lucas attended, reflecting on the organisation’s impact on his career and upbringing. He commended the NYMT for treating its young members like professionals and not patronising them.

“These are young professionals; they perform with the same intensity and integrity and commitment. So, you know, this is not about giving back, for me this is just an honour; it was a complete pleasure to just sit there and watch these shows,” said Lucas.

Lucas joined the NYMT in 1987, aged just 13, and his success speaks for itself.

Alongside Lucas, NYMT’s impressive alumni include Lily James, Jude Law, Sue Perkins, Idris Elba, and Eddie Redmayne.

Sam Carter has been a member for two years. “I’ve learned so much and met incredible people who’ve helped me grow as a performer and individual. They’ve taught me about focusing on bringing energy whenever and wherever I perform onstage and believing in myself and my ability to face new challenges and learn new skills,” he said.

The closing Platform performance was a reminder of what young people are capable of when their talents are honed, and they are given opportunities in the arts. The performers were mature, and their vocals worthy of West End stages.

In 2024, the NYMT staged three well-received productions, and will produce four next year: Fame, Tuck Everlasting, Carousel, and Lightning Boy.
